Self-directed Support - Direct Payments

For people being cared for:

The Adults’ Social Care Services Directorate of their local council may give them money to choose and control their social care support. It is their personal budget and is called Self-Directed Support. Their social care or health worker will talk with them about the support needed. They will need to have had a social care assessment and if they have social care needs they will be able to apply for self-directed support.

If you care for a family member:
If you care for a member of your family, Social Services may be able to help you look after them.

How much money will be given?
You will be asked questions about what the person you care for needs in order to live happily and safely; you will then be advised of how much money there will be to pay for the support.

How to get the support?
Your local council will make sure that the money is used for the things in the support plan. You must not spend more money than is given to you, unless you can pay for the extra things yourself. If you do not spend all of the money given to you on things in the support plan, your council may ask you to give some back.
