The Carers Equal Opportunities Act
added 10th Nov 2004
The Carers Equal Opportunities Bill became an Act on 22nd July 2004 and is likely to be implemented in England and Wales on 1st April 2005.
What will this mean?
When the new Act comes into force carers will be given more opportunities and more choices. Here are some of the main things that the Act will achieve:
Local authorities will have a duty to tell carers about their rights.
When carrying out a carers assessment local authorities will have to consider whether the carer wishes to work, wiahes to study or wishes to pursue some leisure activities.
Local authorities will be given power to enlist the help of health, education and housing authorities in providing support for carers.

added 4th Nov 2004
A new pilot scheme in Worthing will offer help and support to carers by putting them in touch with one another. The Carers Connected scheme was launched this week by The Parkinsons Disease Society and The Carers Liaison Service Worthing and enables carers a little respite by giving them the chance to meet regularly with others in a similar situation.
