Human rights
Human rights are fundamental rights and freedoms which government and public authorities are legally obliged to respect. The rights guaranteed by international codes fall into three broad classes:- Individual Civil and Political Liberties including: freedom from arbitrary arrest, detention without trial, and torture or other maltreatment; freedom of movement, association, and expression; and religious, conscientious, and philosophical liberty.
- Social and Economic Rights and Freedoms such as: rights to education, health care, work, fair conditions of employment; and maintenance of at least a minimum standard of living.
- The 'third-generation' Collective Rights (the rights of peoples), designed to advance the position of minorities and bolster self-determination and equality, as well as to control the capacity of richer nations to use their resources to exploit poorer ones.
