Getting enough breaks?

Many people find that an important part of looking after themselves is making sure that you have enough breaks from the work and worries of providing care.

If you are unsure whether you are coping well you might find the following questions help you assess whether you need to do more about ensuring you get the breaks you need.

How often do you get a break from caring?
  • Twice a week or more?
  • About once a week?
  • Less than once a week?

Which best describes your thoughts for taking a break?
  • I have never thought of taking a break from caring
  • I have thought about a break but taking one is impossible
  • I have thought about a break but don't know how to get one
  • I would like more short breaks

Do you get all the breaks you need?
  • Yes
  • No

If you are not getting all the breaks you need, consider taking these actions:

  • Do nothing (leave things as they are)
  • Talk to the person you care for about your need for breaks
  • Talk through the situation with a friend
  • Talk though the situation with a carers worker (from your local West Sussex Carers Support Services or at your GP surgery if they have one)
  • Talk to your GP about your needs
