Afyia Trust launch of first national black and minority ethnic carers panel network
Set up to raise the profile of and shed light on the cultural issues faced by black carers and their families, this new scheme, funded by the Department of Health's National Carers Strategy Unit, will work on recruiting, training and mentoring a further 20 carers in the coming year to work as national ambassadors. "BME voluntary and community groups play a vital role in assisting BME carers whose role is often hidden. More has to be done to support them. Having a National BME Carers Panel will provide greater scope for good practice to be developed upon" stated Surinder Sharma, National Director for Equality and Human Rights at the Department of Health. Crawley Ethnic Minority Respite Centre provides breaks for people from any of the ethnic minority communities living within Crawley who are caring for an elderly relative (60+). A range of activities is available at the Maidenbower Day Centre, on Mondays for men and on Wednesdays for women, for a small fee.
